Seawater Intake System

Flexible Engineered Solutions designed, manufactured, project managed and tested a Seawater Intake System for operation on the Pierce North Sea Oil Field. The system was installed in the third quarter of 2004 for operation by Bluewater.

The Seawater Intake System is designed to draw seawater from a specific depth below the surface. The Pierce Seawater Intake system was capable of drawing water at least 40 m below sea level.

The Pierce Seawater Intake System was designed to pass a flow rate of 2000 m3/hour into the FPSO system.

To ensure the seawater enters the FPSO a full and comprehensive pressure drop assessment is completed to suit the specific requirements of the system.

The following section highlights design criteria of the Pierce Seawater Intake System:

• Design Pressure Internal: 0.15 – 2 Bar
• Design Pressure External: 1.6 Bar
• Design Temperature: -10 to 20 Deg C

Anti-Fouling protection is provided to suit the specific requirements of the client / system. However the Pierce Seawater system was designed to incorporate an anti-fouling cover upon the hose and a Sodium Hypochlorite hose system installed integral to the main hose. The Sodium Hypochlorite hose system was design to be fully dis-connectable with the main hose.

A fatigue analysis was compiled for the Pierce Seawater Intake system to verify the suitability of the Hose Assembly and associated steel work. The fatigue analysis verified the suitability of the equipment for an operational life of 20 years.

The Pierce Seawater Intake system was design to operate in normal conditions without maintenance. Installation and un-installation achieved entirely at deck level using standard equipment. Installation and un-installation studies are complied to ensure the FPSO crew are given all necessary information.

To ensure the project runs to the clients requirements the following documentation is complied, as a minimum, and issued for review and approval during the project:

• Inspection & Testing Plan
• Production Schedule
• Full Material Certification
• Factory Acceptance Test Procedures
• Welding & NDT Documents

There are no parameters to the level of commitment given to customer satisfaction. Experience and technical ability gives FES the edge in terms of reliability and above all flexibility; a flexibility that enables FES to provide a first class engineered solution.
